A cause of death for Chad Lowe and wife Kim Painter’s 13-year-old daughter, Fiona, has been determined, Us has confirmed.
On Thursday, October 1, the L.A. medical examiner clarified that Fiona was pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29. Her death was ruled a suicide, per the coroner’s office. (People first reported the news.)
Lowe, 58, and Painter, 52, announced the loss of their daughter in a joint statement on Wednesday, September 30, describing Fiona as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative, and loved to dance.” (The Lowes also share daughters Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.)
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the couple told multiple media outlets in their statement.
The grieving parents went on to say, “[Fiona] was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time.”
In their statement, Painter and Low indicated that Fiona struggled with her mental health by encouraging anyone in crisis to reach out for help.
“If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988,” their statement concluded.
L.A. medical examiner records obtained by Us on Thursday confirmed that Fiona died at a local hospital two days earlier.
Several of the Lowe family’s close friends and loved ones have spoken out in the wake of Fiona’s tragic death to offer them condolences.

Chad’s longtime best friend, Chris Ufland, acknowledged that the Pretty Little Liars actor was going through “something unimaginable.”
“My heart goes out to [Chad] and the family,” he wrote via Instagram on Wednesday. “This feels incredibly personal to me. Just love my brother.”
Like the Lowes mentioned in their own statement, Ufland, 58, encouraged anyone in crisis to reach out to loved ones or professionals.
“If anyone out there is going thru pain reach out to a suicide hotline or a loved one. Find love and support,” his statement concluded.
Chad’s father, Charles “Chuck” Lowe, shared a photo of Fiona swimming in a pool, along with a somber caption. (Chad is the younger brother of Rob Lowe, who, for his part, shares two sons, Matthew, 33, and John, 30, with wife Sheryl Berkoff.)
“Rest in peace sweet Fiona,” Chuck wrote on Wednesday.
Chad and his family experienced the trauma of losing their home in January 2025 when wildfires swept through the Los Angeles area. In the aftermath of the fires, Chad posted a sobering photo of the rubble where his home once stood.
“This is what remains of 10 years of building our lives. Our hearts are broken, but we are comforted by all the well wishes and offers of assistance,” Lowe captioned the photo. “We are OK and will be OK. We have each other. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.”
Later that year, Chad celebrated the much more joyous milestone of Fiona “officially becoming a teenager” on her 13th birthday.
“Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” Chad wrote to Fiona via Instagram in November 2025.
