Before Beverley Mitchell landed her fame-making role as Lucy Camden on 7th Heaven in 1996, the actress dazzled judges on the beauty pageant circuit.

While speaking to Us Weekly on Saturday, April 28, the 37-year-old revealed that her worst summer vacation involved a road trip to Las Vegas for a competition. “The car overheated and we got stuck on the side of the road on a very steep inline. It was rough,” Mitchell recalled at the third Annual We All PlayFUNdraiser in Santa Monica.

Mitchell’s mother, Sharon, saved the day. “My mom was my hero,” the Hollywood Darlings star told Us. “My mom figured it out.”

Car trips with Mitchell’s daughter Kenzie, 5, and son Hutton, 3, are equally action-packed. “Listening to them negotiate in the back seat just cracks me up,” said Mitchell, who shares her kids with accountant husband Michael Cameron. “They literally have full negotiations whether it’s a book or a toy. They also do a lot role playing lately. That’s a little strange, but fun.”

Right now, Mitchell says both children share a mutual interest in dinosaurs — especially Hutton. But during a recent trip to New York City, the family skipped The American Museum of Natural History. “That’s something I want to do with them,” she told Us. “But I’m afraid that he’s going to be afraid of dinosaurs once he realizes how big they are. Right now they’re small in these little books.”

Though parenthood is Mitchell’s most favorite role, she admits sometimes it can be overwhelming. “I always just try to take a deep breathe and know that’s a short period of time. Just breathe through it and know that you are doing the best job that you possibly can,” she told Us. “We never give ourselves enough credit for being superheroes!”
