Hannah Mongie was 18 years old when she became pregnant in 2015. The baby’s father, Kaden, was 20, and couldn’t wait to be a dad. But two days after hearing his son’s heartbeat for the first time during an ultrasound, Kaden suddenly passed away from natural causes.

“I didn’t get out of bed for two months after Kaden’s death,” Mongie, now 21, told Scary Mommy on Wednesday, January 10. “And I most certainly was not going to even think of the word ‘adoption’! That was not going to be an option for me because Taggart was my last piece of Kaden.”

But as her pregnancy progressed, Mongie, who lives in Provo, Utah, made the decision to place the baby for adoption. As she explained to Scary Mommy: “Over time . . . I learned that Tagg was his own person. He was not his father, and he needed a chance at the life he deserved.”

After giving birth in March 2016, Mongie spent two days with her newborn and recorded a heartbreaking message for him that went viral after it was shared on the Love What Matters Facebook page earlier this month.

“This is for you, Tagg. I made this video so that you know how much I love you,” Mongie began. “I wanted to tell you why I made the decision to place you with your family. Gosh, you’re so cute, you’re making this hard!”

Mongie praised Taggart’s adoptive parents, Emily and Brad Marsh. “I fell in love with them and they were beyond anything I could have asked for,” she said through tears. “And I have really, really high standards for anyone who is going to raise my child.”

The clip has been viewed more than 2 million times on Facebook.

“This video was created so that he would be able to look back and know that this decision was purely out of love for him,” Mongie wrote alongside the footage. “He will never have to think that I ‘gave him up’ or that I did not love him. He will always be able to know that I loved him more than anyone else in the world.”

But Taggart knows his birth mom loves him. She is a frequent visitor in his home. “Rather than ‘giving up’ or ‘away,’ I just adopted his entire family into mine. Including his extended family,” Mongie told local news station KTVU on Monday, January 8. “His mom, Emily, is still one of my best friends in the whole world. She honestly is everything I want to be as a person and a mother. I am so grateful that Tagg led me to her and their family. They are a blessing alone. And with Tagg, they are everything I need.”
