“It was his choice to become 100 percent vegan,” Deschanel told Us Weekly at Mercy for Animals’ Hidden Heroes gala on Saturday, September 15. Moments later, the Bones alum joked: “He’s kind of like the little vegan police now. I have to watch what he’s doing socially so he doesn’t alienate people!”

Deschanel, 41, and her husband, David Hornsby, are also parents of Calvin, 3. “From birth, they’ve been vegetarian,” the actress told Us of her kids. “We talk to them about why we eat the way we do.”

The star, who stopped eating meat at age 13, was giddy to be at the Mercy for Animals event. “I think they’re a very important organization in the animal rights movement,” she explained. “They open eyes about what is going on in the meat and dairy industry.”

I don’t eat candy!’’” Deschanel told the website Garden of Life in 2015. “So, I’m really proud of him because nutrition is important to me, and I love it when I have these victories.
