Married at First Sight’s Jamie Otis is grieving after suffering a miscarriage at four months pregnant in July. And to help cope with the devastating loss, the 30-year-old reality star has been opening up on her blog. But not all the feedback has been encouraging.
In a Friday, August 12, post, Otis shared a heartless comment that left her reeling: “I think you may be using this [blog] as ‘cathartic release’ but you are also capitalizing on the fact that there is sympathy to be sought after enduring such a thing. It is understandable to write about such loss and pain. Some of us have been there, too,” the person wrote. “But to publicize it on a platform to sell your book is disgusting. You need to heal your heart instead of capitalizing on the monetary gain to be had in place of your loss.”
Otis’ book “Wifey: 101” was released in June 2016. In the memoir, she documents her marriage struggles with Doug Hehner and reveals an abusive past.
Instead of letting the cruel criticism roll off her back, Otis chose to stand up for herself. “Typically I would ignore such a hateful comment, but since you’re on my blog and I am a bit emotional I am going to address this,” she wrote. “First of all, I am not publicizing the loss of my son on a platform to sell books. That makes me digested — to think you’d even think that is heartless.”
In her response, she described the days after losing her baby boy. “I’d sit in bed numb with no motivation to get out and do anything. I walked around like a zombie day in and day out. I cancelled two TV shows in LA and an abundance of press based around my book,” the registered nurse wrote. “Finally my husband said to me that I have to get back to work … So the next day I began working. I ‘promoted’ my book and my jewelry. And Doug was right. It helped keep my mind busy so I wasn’t just lying around with greasy hair crying all day.”
She continued: “The short of it all: YES, I am ‘promoting my book.’ And my jewelry line for that matter. It’s my job and it’s the only thing helping me move forward. When I want to lay in bed in a puddle of tear and wallow in my own self pity I tell myself to get up and get moving. I remind myself the advice my husband gave me.”’
Otis previously detailed how she and Hehner had been in the middle of planning a gender-reveal party when they learned that their baby boy’s heart had stopped beating.
The couple met on season 1 of Married at First Sight and documented their life together on the spinoff series Married at First Sight: The First Year.
