Still coping. During a Tuesday, July 12, appearance on Steve Harvey, Larry Birkhead said that it’s “tough” for daughter Dannielynn, 9, to visit her late mother Anna Nicole Smith’s grave.
"It's tough raising a little girl without a mom. You always want to make sure you're doing the right things and a thing that a mom would choose that a dad might not choose,” he told Steve Harvey. “There were days on the playground where she would say that she wants her mom back … it's tough for her to visit the grave.”
Dannielynn was only 5 months old when Smith died at age 39 in February 2007 due to a drug overdose. The reality TV personality's son, Daniel, had previously passed away from an accidental overdose at age 20, three days after Dannielynn’s birth.
“It makes me emotional thinking about everything we've been through,” the single dad, 43, said Tuesday. “It's just been a roller coaster."
During the interview, Harvey, 59, asked Birkhead what his little girl knows about her iconic mom.
"She knows that her mom was famous and that people want to know about her," the photographer explained. "So it's different for my daughter because it's nothing for her to go past and see a story in the checkout stands on the cover of magazines of her mom or herself or us or whatever. And it's a little different than your normal situation, but I make it as normal as I can."
The episode also gave viewers a glimpse of Birkhead’s daily routine with Dannielynn at their Louisville, Kentucky, home. From picking out her outfits to helping her with her homework, the Millionaire Matchmaker alum does his best to be Mr. Mom.
"It's a lot of work, but there's a lot of reward there," Birkhead explained on the show. "Every day is like an adventure. It's a little bit of a struggle; you don't have enough time in the day and you always wish you had that extra pair of hands to help out."
