The Gabonese model opened up about her grief in a birthday Instagram post on Tuesday, May 15. “I had a miscarriage and needed to have surgery,” Mbouguiengue began in her caption. “It was very easy to complain and self pity but I refused to let the enemy win. I stayed faithful and prayed up. I spent hours focusing on the many ways the Lord has blessed me.”

Mbouguiengue, who shares 3-year-old daughter Cadence with the Fast and Furious actor, 40, added: “How could I complain when God has blessed me with the opportunity to already experience motherhood?” (Ludacris is also father of girls Cai, 5, and Karma, 16, and Shaila, 21, from previous relationships.)

To ease the pain, Mbouguiengue turned to religion. “I’m sharing this with you all to remind you to live in gratitude,” wrote Mbouguiengue. “When the enemy tries to knock you down, get even closer to your faith. My faith has been tested many times throughout my life but I’m only getting stronger.”

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, roughly 15 to 20 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S. end in miscarriage, which is defined as the loss of a fetus before the 20th week.

Mbouguiengue and the former rapper (real name: Christopher Brian Bridges) began dating in 2009 and got engaged in December 2014 — and then married that same day! “We’ve been through ups and downs like true relationships do,” Ludacris told WGCI Chicago back in 2015. “That’s my best friend at the end of the day. We’re going got try and Keith Sweat this thing; trying to ‘Make it Last Forever.’”
