Serena Williams Struggles With ‘Postpartum Emotions’: Last Week ‘I Felt Like I Was Not a Good Mom’

When tennis legend Serena Williams pulled out of the Rogers Cup on Saturday, August 4, she cited “personal reasons.” Two days later, the 23-time Grand Slam winner elaborated on her decision in an honest Instagram post

“Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom,” wrote Williams on Monday, August 5. 

The 36-year-old, who welcomed her first child, daughter Alexis Olympia, in September 2017, noted that she has read “several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to 3 years if not health with.” To ease her symptoms, the athlete revealed that she has been “talking things through” with women including her sisters and mother, Oracene Price.

“It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby,” Williams noted in her post. “We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be. However, that means although I have been with her every day of her life, I’m not around as much as I would like to be. Most of you moms deal with the same thing. Whether stay-at-home or working finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes.”

The Being Serena star, who shares her 11-month-old baby girl with her Reddit cofounder husband, Alexis Ohanian, signed off with a message of hope: “I’m here to say: If you are having a rough day or week — I am, too!!! There’s always tomm!”
