The Challenge’s Sarah Rice Details Heartbreaking Miscarriage: ‘I Felt Like a Coffin’

Sarah Rice is getting real. During the Thursday, April 26, episode of her podcast Brain Candy, The Challenge vet revealed that she suffered a miscarriage. For a few weeks, Rice’s cohost Susie Meister had been teasing that they had a “surprise” announcement coming. However, that announcement recently changed.

“The surprise was gonna be that I am pregnant. It was so exciting, it was great. It was so hard to keep my mouth shut,” Rice, 32, began. “Then, I got another surprise when I went in for my first ultrasound at 12 weeks and the baby didn’t have a heartbeat. No more baby. I had a miscarriage.”

“I think for the first time in my entire life, I felt sorrow,” the former Real World: Brooklyn star continued. “What was really traumatizing for me was that the baby stopped growing at about 9 weeks and I didn’t find out until 12 weeks, so I felt like a coffin. I was, like, loving and romanticizing something that had been dead inside me.”

Rice, who married boyfriend Landon Patterson in May 2015, explained that while she feels she’s very in touch with “sexual reproductive health” and is even in a sex therapy group, she was never really spoken to about what happens when your body goes through that. “The doctor was like, ‘Oh it’s so common,’” she said. “They said my mind was convinced that I was pregnant but my body wasn’t … I was like, ‘This is so typical of my body!’ My mind was like, ‘I don’t care what’s going on, we’re doing it!’”

As for how she’s doing now, Rice said she’s finally feeling a bit better.

“What really helped was moving my body, was being around friends,” she shared. “I would always say it feels like I applied to Harvard then told everybody I was going to Harvard, bought the Harvard sweatshirt, then got an apartment next to Harvard and was so excited, then got a letter saying I didn’t get it. And then have to go back and go like …. ‘Remember that sweatshirt I bought?’”
