They tied the knot shortly afterwards at their Georgia home.
"We did it literally in our living room in our home," she said on her podcast on January 22. "We come from large family. I'm one of four, Ed is one of six. We invited people. They had no clue they were coming to a wedding. They thought they were coming to a New Year's party."
The former child star joined The Cosby Show at the age of 5, and became the youngest ever Emmy nominee in 1986. After the show ended in 1992, she went on to star in Tyler Perry's House of Payne and The Celebrity Apprentice and films including Beauty Shop and Madea Goes to Jail.
Hartwell was previously married to Real Housewives of Atlanta star Lisa Wu. They split in 2011 and share a son, Ed Jr.
