Zooey Deschanel will not be lining up at an overpriced brunch buffet on May 13. When Us Weekly asked the New Girl actress, 38, about her favorite Mother’s Day traditions, she quipped: “Avoiding restaurants.”
Besides, the mom of daughter Elsie, 2, and 11-month-old Charlie, prefers to prepare meals at home with her husband, Jacob Pechenik. She and the producer are so passionate about fresh ingredients that they cofounded The Farm Project. “Our whole mission is we’re trying to make sustainable, local food as affordable and easy as packaged and processed alternatives,” Deschanel told Us and other reporters at the L.A. Times Food Bowl opening on Tuesday, May 1.“That’s what our whole life is about right now.”
At the Deschanel-Pechenik household dishes are heavy on fresh fruits and vegetables. “My daughter loves eating food that is growing in the garden,” the star revealed. “If she sees something growing, she’s way more likely to eat it. She also loves purple. So If I give her purple carrots, purple cauliflower or purple basil, she’s way more likely to eat it.”
Deschanel, who wrapped the final season of Fox’s New Girl late last year, has been focusing on The Farm Project and her family as of late. “Charlie is turning one, so that’s pretty cool,” quipped the 500 Days of Summer actress, adding that she’s going to “give him a little cake to mash his hand in and stuff.”
As for the conclusion of New Girl, Deschanel teased she’s not sure if it’s over for good. “I don’t know if it’s the end-end, but the end for now,” she explained. “We finished in December, so it feels like done for me. But I’m happy it’s on right now, and I”m happy for everybody to see the new, final season.”
New Girl airs on Fox on Tuesdays at 9:30 ET.
