Hawn -- known for hit movies like Overboard and Bird on a Wire -- gave birth to her only daughter on April 19, 1979; she split with musician husband Bill Hudson in 1980. The Cactus Flower star raised her children with partner Kurt Russell. When her little girl was born, doctors initially told Hawn she'd welcomed a boy. "I didn't know what it was. I just felt that it was a girl," she has said. "Then they said, 'Oh, no it's a girl!' And I said, 'What part of her anatomy were you looking at?'"
Before Hawn began filming Private Benjamin, "I drove joyfully to our offices almost every day, packing my tiny Kate in her little car seat, her bottles and cereal in my bag, along with a few rattles and toys and her fold-up playpen," she wrote in her 2005 memoir, A Lotus Grows in the Mud. "It was so great having Kate gurgling away in the office with us in the midst of the hustle and bustle of pre-production."
"I'd go crazy if I couldn't go out and walk in the streets," Hudson (at an airport with Hawn) said after becoming famous. "I learned some of that from my mom. She is so recognizable. She's just so Goldie! When I was a girl I would get embarrassed and say, 'Mom, put a hat on or something.'"
Like her mother, Hudson took ballet lessons as a child. When the Something Borrowed star turned 11, Hawn agreed to let her daughter try another style of dance. "I went into my first hip-hop class and that was it. That was it!" said Hudson (at a Big Sisters event in Hollywood).
During Hudson's formative years, she rarely fought with her mother. "I remember one time, she chased me around the house with a wooden spoon. She was so mad at me and she didn't know what to do, because my mom doesn't really get like that. She was cooking -- I said something horrible -- and she looked at me and she said, 'What did you just say?'" Hudson (in New York City) recalled. "I couldn't help but laugh. . . We both burst into laughter."
Hudson and Hawn (at a First Wives Club benefit for Stop Cancer with Oliver Hudson and Wyatt Russell) have always been honest with each other. "I was 15, and I remember my mother going, 'Honey, have you already had sex?'" the Killer Inside Me actress recalled. "When I said yes -- that I'd already lost my virginity to a boy I was just mad for -- she was supportive."
Hudson's family came out to support her at the Hollywood premiere of Raising Helen. She credits Hawn for cultivating a positive environment at home. "She's always interested in something that's about mankind, human connection, love, relationships, joy, happiness. She really is interested in people's optimism and how they attack their life," Hudson says of Hawn. "She's given all of us a really, really wonderful perspective on what we're doing here on the planet."
"Having a daughter follow in mom's footsteps is not easy. She said, 'Hey, I'm my own person,' and dammit, we made sure she was," Hawn (supporting Hudson at the Skeleton Key premiere in London) has said. "I believe that one of the most important things as a parent you can do is let go at times so that these children can formulate their own identity."
The actresses shared a laugh at a New York Yankees game; Hudson was dating Alex Rodriguez at the time. The Almost Famous actress credits her mom with teaching her "to look at life as lessons to be learned: we all experience love and disappointment, laughter and pain. Her philosophy has stopped me from becoming cynical, which squashes the good things. If you focus on positivity and honesty, you'll be happy."
"I have this stunning, iconic mother. I have a grounded, aspiring, and philanthropist mother. She is not just a talent and crazy and gorgeous and beautiful. She is truly an inspiring mother," Hudson (with the Shampoo actress in Aspen, Colorado) has said. "I can only hope that, as a mother, I can live up to that."
The look-alike blondes joined Bruce Springsteen on stage during the Rainforest Fund's 21st Birthday event in New York City. "I always sang, I always danced and I always performed," the Reluctant Fundamentalist star has said. "My mother was a big believer that if you want to do this in your life, you have to get up and go for it."
Though the mother-daughter duo both consider themselves to be free spirits, Hawn has admitted their parenting perspectives differ. "I was more permissive than she is. She's stricter, but she's a good mother," the Banger Sisters star (strolling through Santa Monica, Calif.) has said of Hudson. "She's a love mother and she is a present mother -- and that is very important."
Denying rumors that Hudson had secretly wed Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy (with whom she has a son, Bingham), Hawn told Us Weekly: "She's very happy . . . They'll get married when they're ready."
