Better with age! Adam Levine offered a peek into his past on Friday, March 6, sharing an amazingly nerdy throwback photo.
The Maroon 5 hottie, now 35, took to Instagram to post a shot of himself from 1996, when he was in his late teens. A young Levine smirks at the camera, narrowing his eyes with a closed-mouth grin. He sports long, shoulder-length brown hair, which is parted down the middle, and a patchy, awkward goatee.
"1996 in the house," the Grammy winner captioned the picture. "That HARRIBLE 90s goatee took me an entire summer to grow."
"When I was 17, I was gross," Levine spilled on a 2010 episode of MTV's When I Was 17. "My hair was long and really ratty and nappy. [I wore] huge, oversize flannels that didn't fit [and I had] a goatee. Like a bad version of Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites."
At the time of the photo, Levine was playing in a band called Kara's Flowers with his future Maroon 5 bandmates in his home state of California. It would be six more years until the "This Love" band released its debut studio album, 2002's Songs About Jane.
"When I was in high school, I was a little rebellious," Levine told Nightline in 2011. "I wanted to play music. I didn't want to do the things they were teaching me. I picked up a guitar and that was it. The second I picked up a guitar, I never really put it down again. I fell so madly in love with it, it's all I did. It consumed my every thought, and I'd have friends over that didn't even play instruments and I would just put instruments in their hands."
