Amber Heard Discusses Her Bisexuality: “I’m Not, And Wasn’t Ever, Ashamed”

Amber Heard talks about being bisexual
Amber Heard explains that she came out as bisexual in 2010 because she wanted to make a statement that she was "not, and wasn't ever, ashamed."

Amber Heard may prefer to keep her relationship with Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp under wraps, but the Paranoia actress didn't feel the need to keep mum about one of her past relationships. In a new interview with Elle magazine, the 27-year-old stunner opens up about her bisexuality, explaining that she came out in 2010 to make a statement.

"I didn't want to look like I was hiding anything," she said of coming forward about her then-relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree (the pair dated from 2008 to 2012). "I'm not, and wasn't ever, ashamed."

"I don't imagine myself, my work, or my life, fitting into any kind of standardized path," she continued. "In fact, the idea of there even being a standard freaks me out a lot."

The actress, who will also star in October's Machete Kills, spoke with AfterEllen.com following her announcement in 2010 to emphasize that she felt like she was "part of the problem" by staying in the closet.

"I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else but I'm with who I'm with, I love who I love and I'm not a better actress than I was yesterday and my personal life should have no effect on that," she said at the time. "I think that the injustice of people staying in the closet is more than I can bear with a clear conscience and I couldn't sleep at night if I was a part of that problem, if I was part of the lies."

Most recently, however, Heard has found love with 50-year-old Depp after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009. And though she has chosen not to talk about their May-December romance ("It's not part of my professional life," she told Flare magazine), the pair have been getting closer.

In July, the actress accompanied Depp and his childrenLily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11 — on a trip to Tokyo to promote the actor's new film, The Lone Ranger.

Depp announced that he had split from his love of 14 years, singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, in June 2012 after a long estrangement; Depp and Paradis, 40, never wed.
