She may play the daughter of a kooky-but-loving family on the hit TV series "Modern Family," but in real life, Ariel Winter hasn't had it so easy.
After landing in the middle of a custody battle involving allegations she was physically and emotionally abused, the 15-year-old star was placed in the care of her sister and brother-in-law last year. Now, the trio is marking a new milestone on their path to becoming their own "Modern Family." They're moving into a new home together.
Winter's older sister and legal guardian, Shanelle Workman, and Workman's husband, David Barry Gray, have purchased a 3,636-square-foot in Sherman Oaks, California, for $1.365 million, according to Zillow.
The house, built in 1939, includes 5 bedrooms and 4.5 baths and, according to the listing, features high ceilings, crown molding, original hardwood floors, a separate full guest unit with kitchen and living room, a pool, and a barbeque area. In addition to Winter, the couple is raising their own two children. And it seems that acting runs in the family. Workman, 34, has had small parts on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Rizzoli & Isles" and recurring roles on the soaps "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "One Life to Live." Gray has appeared on shows like "Private Practice" and "The Closer," and played Todd Palin in the HBO movie "Game Change."
According to court documents last year, Workman alleges that her mother, Chris Workman, participated in "ongoing physical abuse (slapping, hitting, pushing) and emotional abuse (vile name-calling, personal insults about minor and minor's weight, attempts to 'sexualize' minor, deprivation of food, etc.) for an extended period of time." Not-so-ironically, Shanelle had been reportedly removed from her mother's care as a teen decades earlier and spent more than two years in the foster care system. Chris Workman has denied the allegations.
Having a nice house is a perk, but what Winter really cares about is finally getting a strong adult role model and finally forging a relationship with her sister after all these years. "I didn't know my sister much growing up, and I wasn't really allowed to see her. I know now that my sister is the type of person I'd aspire to grow up to be like,î she told Teen Vogue in December. "It's really interesting how close you can get with somebody in such a short period."
