Those who knew and loved Matt Bendik—including his girlfriend, Glee actress Becca Tobin—are reeling over his sudden, shocking death at age 35 on July 10. A source close to the late nightclub owner tells Us Weekly that friends and family are "baffled" over his passing, which is still unexplained.
"He was such a solid guy," the insider tells Us of Bendik, who was found dead at Philadelphia's Hotel Monaco on Thursday. "What a loss… Everyone is looking for answers and reasons right now."
A second source reiterates that the DBA managing partner had his act together, "didn't do drugs," and "only casually" drank. "He was a hardworking businessman, the nicest guy, very diligent, with such vision," the source tells Us. "It is unbelievable. None of us knows what it could be. He was a guy that loved life and loved living."
He also loved Tobin, 28, who plays Kitty Wilde on Fox's hit musical dramedy Glee. "He was doing really well and they were happy together," the second insider says.
As previously reported, Bendik was found by a housekeeper at his hotel in Philly, where he was on a business trip this week. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found in his room; an incident report also makes no mention of alcohol, medications, or weapons. Philadelphia police tell Us there are "no signs of foul play" at this point.
Bendik's death comes almost one year to the day after the passing of Tobin's former Glee costar Cory Monteith at age 31. Monteith died of heroin and alcohol toxicity in a Vancouver hotel on July 13, 2013.
