Below Deck Med’s Gael Cameron is opening up about surviving an abusive relationship following Nathan Gallagher‘s arrest.

Cameron posted an Instagram Reel on Wednesday, October 21, which showed her visiting the Sweethearts art installation in Sydney. The outdoor display serves as a public service announcement campaign to raise awareness about the issue of violence against women in Australia.

“56 hearts. One for each woman [whose] life ended at the hands of someone they once chose to trust this year alone in Australia,” she wrote. “I knew coming here my heart would hurt. But walking up and seeing those hearts in person my eyes ran and my heart broke into a million pieces again.”

Without sharing specific details, Cameron reflected on her own traumatic experience.

“Knowing how close I came to being one of those hearts I cried. Not for myself. I cried for the families, and for those who lost their lives at the hands of another,” she continued. “But also for the women still there. Still stuck. Whose fate still feels out of their own hands.”

She added: “Those who understand, understand. And those who can’t relate I hope you find it in your heart to try to understand.”

Cameron noted the memorial alone “isn’t good enough,” writing, “Something needs to change. Something needs to give. I’ve sat afraid for long enough, but the fear I feel is what allows this to keep happening.”

The reality star also issued a message to those who have shared their experiences with her.

“To all the women and men who have messaged me with similar stories: I hear you, I see you.
There are women who can’t share this. Can’t like it, can’t save it, can’t have it sitting in their phone,” she said. “I know you’re there. I have hope that someday you get to say to yourself the same thing I say to myself everyday day [sic] that keeps me going. And is the reason you see me on here grateful for everyday I get to be here.”

She concluded: “Thank you to the artist that put together this installation. You’re work and message is appreciated more than you know @omimccurdie @piplysaght 1800RESPECT (AU) 1800 737 732 National Domestic Violence Hotline (US) 1-800-799-7233 National Domestic Abuse Helpline (UK) 0808 2000 247.”

While Cameron didn’t specify whether she was discussing her relationship with Gallagher, she has recently been speaking out about the complicated period in her life after the exes welcomed son Kayden in June 2025.

News broke in August that Gallagher was arrested on domestic violence charges in Australia in December 2025. Gallagher was charged with “assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentionally chok[ing] a person without consent and common assault” following an alleged incident with an unnamed victim.

A police memo revealed that Gallagher was eventually granted conditional bail. He was later convicted on three counts of domestic violence after failing to appear in court. Us also confirmed that Gallagher is the subject of an Apprehended Violence Application that was filed on behalf of Cameron in New South Wales.

“I’m not claiming I was perfect. I wasn’t. I made mistakes, and I will take responsibility for my own actions,” Gallagher told Rolling Stone in a statement in August. “I will not accept being portrayed solely through one account of a relationship when there is another side and evidence relating to it. I have contemporaneous video footage from the night in question, as well as messages and other records, which I believe provide important context.”

In her own statement, Cameron addressed the pair’s tumultuous relationship.

“Hey guys, I just want to say thank you so much for the support you’ve shown for Kayden and I,” she wrote via her Instagram Stories in September. “It’s been a tough season, but I have been using the past few months to quietly heal and rebuild for little man and myself. I really appreciate the love you have sent our way, especially while everything that’s come to light, and I’m really working on finding myself again and moving forward.”
