Talk about a #CosbyMeme #Fail.
Either Bill Cosby or a member of his team came up with a pretty terrible idea on Monday. A #CosbyMeme generator was unveiled on the 77-year-old actor's website, which asked fans to create memes using a variety of classic Bill pictures. The happy-go-lucky link was originally tweeted out from Cosby's handle:
Well, people certainly had a field day with it… but we're guessing not in the way that Team Cosby anticipated. Hundreds of memes were created with the majority of them calling out The Cosby Show alum's alleged sexual assault.
The memes needed to be submitted for approval, but apparently the actor — or whoever thought this whole thing up — forgot about a simple thing called a screenshot. Users just captured whatever image they created and uploaded it to Twitter themselves (no approval needed). Take a look at a few examples below… and these are the PG ones:
Rape claims against Cosby first surfaced in 2006, but the actor settled with one of his alleged victims later that year. The terms were not disclosed, and none of the 13 other women who were involved in the civil suit ended up testifying. However, a few did tell their stories to outlets such as Philadelphia Magazine.
Just last month, comedian Hannibal Buress brought up the forgotten allegations during a stand-up set.
"It's even worse because Bill Cosby has the f***ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate," he told the crowd. "He gets on TV, 'Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the '80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.' Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches. 'I don’t curse onstage.' Well, yeah, you're rapist, so I'll take you saying lots of motherf***ers on Bill Cosby: Himself if you weren't a rapist."
Reps for Cosby have not commented on the debacle.
