Brie Larson may have won her first Oscar on Sunday, February 28, but it’s her aspiring pop star and Disney Channel past that makes us love her even more. The Room star was all glitz and glam when she accepted the trophy for best actress at the 88th Academy awards, but before that, she was once just an adorable teen actress and singer trying to make it in Hollywood.

Larson started her career by appearing in several TV series in the ’90s, such as To Have & to Hold and Touched by an Angel. The now 26-year-old then landed the role of Courtney Enders, the sister of Beverly Mitchell’s Erica, in Disney Channel’s 2003 original movie Right on Track.
Larson went on to make appearances in 13 Going on 30, Sleepover, Madison (she played “Racing Girl No. 2”!) and Hoot before she dabbled in a music career.
In 2005, at the age of 16 — and amid pop sensations Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Hilary Duff hitting it big — Larson released an EP titled Finally Out of P.E.
The perfectly titled four-song album was exactly what you’d imagine. In the music video for “She Said,” Larson portrayed an Avril Lavigne–like fast-food worker who gets revenge on a group of mean girls by serving them burgers that had fallen on the floor.
