Busy Philipps is sharing a positive update on her health six months after undergoing brain surgery.
“I chatted with my oncologist today,” Philipps, 47, told People on Wednesday, September 30, at the Cupertino premiere. “She was like, ‘Really just wanted to talk about Cupertino.’ I’m not even kidding you. She’s like, ‘Your scan was clean. So when’s the show come out? Is it this week or next week?’”
She continued, “I was like, ‘The premiere is tonight.’ She’s like, ‘Amazing.’ Anyway, so yeah, she’s been on the whole journey with me.”
The Dawson’s Creek alum shared in August that she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor after undergoing a Prenuvo full-body scan in February. When she learned the news, Philipps told People in August that she was “hyperventilating” while still “trying to breathe.”
“It is considered malignant, but it has the best prognosis of all of the malignant gliomas,” Philipps’ neuro-oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Miller, told the outlet at the time. “It’s sort of defined as a cancerous tumor based on the ability of the tumor to regrow over time, rather than it looking very malignant under the microscope.”
Philipps subsequently underwent a procedure in March, where doctors removed a 2.6-centimeter mass from her brain. After the initial procedure, Philipps underwent a follow-up surgery when she contracted staphylococcus on her incision and needed a follow-up surgery to debride and clear the wound. The procedure was successful.
“I found out I got the show on the same day as the brain tumor,” she told the outlet on Wednesday. “I said to my doctors, ‘I just was cast in this television show. How can I do this?’ … My doctor was just very confident and said, ‘You’ll have the surgery in a week from today and then you’ll be able to be on set in four weeks.’ And I was.”
Since going public with her health journey, Philipps shared that she has received support far and wide.
“So many people have come up to me in public and just expressed that they’re grateful for me sharing what I’ve gone through and also just the message of like, listen to your body, women,” she said. “If you get a no from a doctor, continue to seek care for yourself if you just feel something’s off.”
“I’m grateful for that. I’ve been overwhelmed with love and support and it’s been very nice,” she continued. “I mean, what? Are people gonna be mean?”
