Christina Grimmie, the ex–Voice contestant who was killed after a concert in Orlando on Friday, June 10, did not know the 27-year-old gunman who shot her, police say.
The man, whose identity has yet to be released by Orlando police, showed up at the Plaza Live theater on Friday night with two handguns, ammunition and a large hunting knife, according to a new report by NBC News.
As previously reported, the gunman walked up to Grimmie and shot her as she was signing autographs with the band Before You Exit after their show. The singer’s brother immediately tackled the gunman, who then shot and killed himself. Grimmie was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but her rep later confirmed to Us Weekly that she had died. She was 22.
“There is no indication that they knew each other,” police chief John Mina said during a press conference on Saturday, June 11.
According to police, the suspect, who appeared to be a “deranged fan,” traveled to Orlando from another city in Florida to commit the crime. Mina stated that the gunman originally planned to travel back home to the undisclosed location after the shooting.
Detectives are also checking the attacker’s cellphone and computer to find a motive for killing Grimmie. They plan to meet with the singer’s family later on Saturday, according to NBC News.
New Jersey native Grimmie was a YouTube star before she landed a spot on Voice coach Adam Levine’s team during season 6 of the hit NBC singing competition in 2014. She finished in third place.
