Christina Grimmie’s Killer Thought She Was His ‘Soul Mate,’ His Friend Told Police

Christina Grimmie’s killer, Kevin James Loibl, had a strange obsession with the Voice alum, who he shot as she was signing autographs following an Orlando concert on Friday, June 10. According to his friend Cory Dennington, who spoke to police, Loibl believed that he and Grimmie were destined to be together.

“He said Loibl would not entertain the idea that his plan would not work, and when Dennington did, he threatened to end their friendship,” a police report obtained by CNN states. “Loibl never elaborated on what he would do if he met Christina, but he referred to her as his ‘soul mate.'”

Dennington, who knew Loibl for 15 years and believes he was his “only friend in the world,” told the Orlando Police Department that Loibl “watched everything to do with [Grimmie]” and became increasingly infatuated with the 22-year-old singer over the last year.

According to CNN, although Loibl claimed to be an atheist, he told Dennington that Grimmie’s Christian faith had “helped him to see the world in a different way.” Dennington added that Loibl once said if God did exist, he “has seen it in [Grimmie].”

Prior to killing the “Find Me” songstress, Loibl underwent a physical transformation, which included a 50-pound weight loss, teeth whitening, Lasik eye surgery and hair implants. According to Dennington, it was all for Grimmie.

Loibl reportedly had a history of violence. Another police report, obtained by TMZ, states that law enforcement were called to his home two times before he murdered Grimmie.

The site reported earlier this month that Loibl and his father’s fiancée, Dawn, got into a heated argument at their St. Petersburg, Florida, home in 2013. Dawn reportedly claimed to police that Loibl slammed her arm into a door, breaking her wrist. Loibl countered that she was drunk and said that he was only trying to escape her. No arrest was made.

In 2014, police were called to Loibl’s home again after his dad got into a fight with Dawn, but again, no arrest was made.

As previously reported, Loibl shot Grimmie during a meet-and-greet after a show at Orlando’s Plaza Live Theater. She died after being taken to a hospital. He shot and killed himself after the pop star’s brother, Marcus Grimmie, tackled him. According to police, Loibl was armed with two handguns, ammunition and a large hunting knife.

On June 11, the shooter’s family placed a note on their front door that read: “Deepest sorrow for lost to the family, friends & fans of the very talented, loving Christina Grimmie. No other comments.”
