CEO of SurveyMonkey Dave Goldberg has died at 47. The husband of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 1.
Goldberg's brother, Robert Goldberg, confirmed the news via Facebook on Friday. "In this time of sorrow, we mourn his passing and remember what an amazing husband, father, brother, son and friend he was," he wrote. (He did not disclose the cause of death.)
"No words can express the depth of loss we feel, but we want his children to learn how much he meant to all of you," he continued. "In lieu of donations, we want to celebrate his life in a manner that respects the family’s privacy as they cope with this tragic, life changing event: Sheryl, their children, and our family would be grateful if people would post their memories and pictures of Dave to his Facebook profile."
Friends and family of the power couple paid tribute to Goldberg following the news, including Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. "Dave Goldberg was an amazing person and I am glad I got to know him," he wrote. "My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family."
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo tweeted that he was "one of the truly great people on the planet — of almost unimaginably remarkable character."
Goldberg and Sandberg, 45, met in 1996 and married in 2004. In March, Sandberg posted a sweet message about her longtime love in honor of the Lean In campaign, which she founded. (LeanIn.Org celebrates men who "lean in" for equality.)
"I met Dave over 15 years ago and we immediately became the best of friends," she wrote at the time. "He was the first person to show me the internet, the kind of friend who shows up to help you move apartments…and always made me feel like I was home no matter where I was. Years later, we dated, married, and now we have two amazing children."
Goldberg is survived by Sandberg and the couple's two children.
