Ellen DeGeneres Says She Inspired Adele’s “Hello,” Plus See the Singer’s Cute TBT!

Please leave your number at the tone. Ellen DeGeneres found herself on the line with several singers in a hilarious clip on her show on Thursday, Oct. 29 — including a faux conversation with Adele via her haunting “Hello” music video.

“Adele and I are good friends and a lot of people don’t realize that the song was based on a conversation that we had,” DeGeneres, 57 prefaced the clip, which showed her seemingly trying to chat with the songstress.

In the video, DeGeneres, sitting in her dressing room, gets a phone call from Adele on her larger-than-life cordless phone (think Zack Morris’ brick phone on Saved by the Bell).

“Hello — it’s me,” the 27-year-old singer launches into her song in the sepia-toned, cinematic music video.

“Oh hey, Adele — what’s going on with you?” the talk show host jokes back on her end.

As the British singer’s music video continues on, DeGeneres gets increasingly frustrated while pretending to have bad reception (“did you say beets?”), noisily eating a bag of chips, and getting exasperated by how slowly Adele is “talking.”

“This might be easier to hear if you stopped playing that piano,” DeGeneres says at one point.

Later on in the clip, the talk show host hops onto another line to chat with two other musical callers — Drake and Lionel Richie.

DeGeneres isn’t the only celeb sharing her excitement after Adele released her powerful new ballad late last week.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Britney Spears excitedly tweeted at Adele that she’d love to swap show tickets with the “Someone Like You” songstress.

“@Adele I’ll trade 2 tickets to my show for 2 tickets to YOURS!” the “Piece of Me” singer tweeted happily after Adele mentioned in a recent i-D interview that she’d love to see Spears in concert. “Stop by #PieceOfMe and say #Hello anytime!!”

Adele took to Instagram on Thursday, Oct. 29, to share her gratitude for the outpouring of support.

“Throwing it way back with this!” she captioned an adorable snapshot of herself as a child smiling with a gap-toothed grin. “Thank you for all the love, I am so blown away. X #TBT.”
