‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Gets R Rating for Sexual Content and Graphic Nudity

Just as NSFW as the last one! Fifty Shades Darker, the latest flick in the trilogy based on EL James’ bestselling S&M-themed novels, has been given an R rating.

It’s likely the movie narrowly avoided the NC-17 rating by skipping some of the book’s most salacious scenes. Like the first film, the sequel was deemed rated R for “strong erotic sexual content, some graphic nudity and language,” according to a statement from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) obtained by E! News.

Fans got a glimpse of some of the steamy scenes when Fifty Shades Darker‘s first official trailer dropped in September. It includes a sexy shower moment between stars Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) and Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) and another glimpse of the couple getting busy in bed together. There’s also lots of scenes of a shirtless Dornan, and a look at a seductive masquerade ball and fireworks.

“This time, no rules, no punishments, and no more secrets,” Johnson says in the trailer, set to Miguel‘s slow version of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.”

In 2015 when the rating[s] for the original Fifty Shades of Grey was released, it caused a stir when the MPAA cited “unusual behavior” as part of the reason for giving it an R rating, probably referring to everything that goes on in the infamous Red Room.

Fifty Shades Darker is scheduled to hit theaters around Valentine’s Day on February 10, 2017. The final movie, Fifty Shades Freed, will premiere one year later on February 9, 2018.
