Michael Banks attempted to climb back down Morro Rock after popping the question, but he had to be rescued from the side of the 600-foot cliff by a helicopter, says Morro Bay Fire Department Captain Todd Gailey.

"[Banks] took a different trail down, much steeper," Gailey explained to AP of the scary scene. "He couldn't go any direction, on a sheer ledge, with his feet dangling 80 feet off the ground."

Gailey was let down from the chopper via cable, where he met Banks, 27, to bring him to safety. Holding on to each other, the two men were carefully hoisted back up to the aircraft.

Although Banks was unharmed, he will still have to pay for such a grand gesture of love.

“The gentleman will be billed for the chopper ride and other related costs," the City of Morro Bay said in a statement to ABC News. "We are glad all involved are OK, and appreciate the hard work of our first responders. Climbing Morro Rock is illegal and dangerous. We hope folks will choose to view it from below, saving themselves and our fire responders time and money and protecting everyone's safety.”

Following the incident, authorities stated that Banks returned to Morro Rock and was later arrested for alleged drug possession after someone claimed they saw him “acting under the influence,” reports ABC News. According to police records, Banks is being held on a $10,000 bond.
