Saving her strength. Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas was briefly hospitalized and will not be joining her Final Five teammates on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in NYC on Sunday, August 28.

“Out of the hospital & resting comfortably,” the three-time gold medalist captioned an Instagram photo on Sunday that showed her lying on a bed swaddled in a large Ohio State blanket with the New York skyline in the background. “#FinalFive so sad I can’t be with u all to present tonite @MTV thank u xoxo #VMAs #myview.”

A rep for Douglas told Us later on Sunday night that the athlete had returned to the hospital for more treatment. “She is back in the hospital tonight, being treated for a seriously infected past mouth injury,” the rep said. “She continues to have deep swelling and adverse reactions to medications.”

The 20-year-old had been set to present an award at the VMAs alongside her teammates Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.

The Olympian, who just competed at her second Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, spoke out earlier this month about being bullied on Twitter after she didn’t place her hand over her heart for the national anthem at her medal ceremony.

“I tried to stay off the internet because there’s just so much negativity,” she said. “Either it was about my hair or my hand not over my heart or I look depressed. It was hurtful. It was hurtful. It was. It’s been kind of a lot to deal with.”
