At last! Jesse Metcalfe proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Cara Santana, on Saturday, August 13, Us Weekly exclusively confirms.
The John Tucker Must Die star, 37, popped the question to the fashion blogger, 31, with a stunning 5.5-carat emerald shaped diamond ring that he designed while aboard a 50-foot sailboat in the middle of the Hudson River in New York. Metcalfe had every detail planned for the surprise proposal, including having their song, Eric Clapton’s “Pretty Girl,” play in the background as they watched the sunset.
“It’s been a long time coming, but we couldn’t be happier,” Metcalfe tells Us Weekly.
The newly engaged couple have been in a relationship for more than 10 years.
“I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight,” Metcalfe, who is best known for playing hunky gardener John Rowland on Desperate Housewives, told Your Tango in 2013 of meeting Santana years ago. “It was more of a slow burn, which I think is a better start for a relationship. I think if it comes on fast and furious, it generally fizzles out just as fast. We were slow and steady.”
“We took the time to get to know each other,” Santana added at the time. “We’ve known each other for, like, 10 years.”
Metcalfe’s proposal comes amid Santana’s 31st birthday celebration. The actor gave his wife-to-be a sweet shout-out on Twitter and Instagram Tuesday, August 16, captioning a photo of them from their proposal: “What a weekend! Meant to get this up yesterday, but was too busy celebrating. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my baby!!!🎉❤️😘.”
