Did Burke Ramsey murder his sister, JonBenét Ramsey? The second and final installment of the CBS docuseries The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey aired on Monday, September 19, and — spoiler alert! — forensic experts landed on the theory that the 6-year-old pageant queen was killed by her older brother in December 1996.
After months of reexamining evidence from the two-decades-old case, a team of experts led by retired FBI agent Jim Clemente and behavioral analyst Laura Richards pointed the finger at Burke (who recently denied the allegations in a three-part interview with Dr. Phil McGraw) and debunked the theory that JonBenét was murdered by an intruder.
In a shocking plot twist, Clemente and Richards speculated that Burke, who was 9 at the time, was eating pineapple late Christmas night when a hungry JonBenét came downstairs and snatched a piece of the fruit from his bowl. They suggested that Burke — who family friends earlier described as bad-tempered and “violent” — got angry and hit his sister in the head with a Maglite flashlight, breaking her skull.
The team then discussed a potential cover-up by the children’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, who were exonerated in 2008. Former case investigator James Kolar said, “[Patsy] said that they loved their children. They would do anything for their children. … She said she would have nothing else to live for if she lost Burke. … That seemed to me motive to cover up for Burke.”
Immediately after the episode aired, stunned viewers took to social media to share their thoughts.
“I will never look at pineapple the same again,” one user tweeted. Another wrote, “Imagine being this close to covering up a murder and a chunk of pineapple locks you up for life.”
