Katie Couric says her two daughters with late husband Jay Monahan were surprised by her recent engagement to John Molner, and she wants to plan a "tasteful" wedding.

Mom's getting married! Katie Couric confesses that her recent engagement to boyfriend John Molner came as a bit of a surprise to daughters Ellie, 22, and Carrie, 17. The 56-year-old veteran journalist shared her girls' reaction with Access Hollywood, and why she's planning to have a "tasteful" second wedding.

"I think they were a little [like] 'Wow,' because it's been the three of us for so long," Couric explained. Her daughters' father, first husband Jay Monahan, died in 1998 at age 42 of colon cancer.

The former Today Show co-anchor, however, said her girls do support her relationship with NYC-based financier Molner, 50. "They really think the world of John," she shared. "He loves them and so I think it's all good and I think it's going to be a while. And I'm focused on Carrie right now and her senior year of high school."

Couric expressed that she's not in a rush to walk down the aisle, but when she does it will be relatively low-key. "It's not like I'm 22 and I'm going to plan a big thing with a big fluffy fancy dress," she said. "I want to do something that feels right for us and our situation."

"We both have kids," she added, "and I think I want to do what's tasteful and right."
