Starting fresh? Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson gave ’90s kids a thrill when they reunited on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, Sept. 23. But as it turns out, it was a miracle that the humorous throwback to their 1997 comedy Good Burger even happened.
Back in 2012, Mitchell, 37, claimed that Thompson never wanted to work with him again. “The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him. I have not been upset about this,” he told TMZ at the time.
“I respect his choice of wanting to make a name for himself solo. There is no bad blood on my side. I’m not declining a reunion, I know the fans love the show and would love to see some type of appearance with us,” he continued. “I just don’t see that ever happening because of how he really feels.”
Mitchell and the Saturday Night Live star, 37, appeared in the Nickelodeon hit All That in the late ’90s, and starred in Kenan & Kel (who loves orange soda!?) from 1996 to 2000, during which time they made the Good Burger movie. This past February, Mitchell revealed that he once tried out for SNL, but never made it past the audition room.
“I did like, I think it’s hilarious now thinking about it, but now doing stand-up and being good at it now, I realize now what I did was not good,” Mitchell recalled in a Reddit AMA. “But basically I did this joke about DMX – if DMX was in Toy Story. It was so bad, it was good, to me. And I remember Tina Fey was there, and I remember afterwards she was like, ‘Good job!’ But I think it was a little too crazy for SNL.”
