Beloved K-pop singer Kim Jonghyun was laid to rest in a private funeral service on Thursday, December 21, and the late singer’s bandmates carried his coffin.
Onew, Key, Taemin and Minho, who performed alongside 27-year-old Jonghyun in the band SHINee, bowed their heads as they carried the casket outside of the Asan Medican Center in Seoul, South Korea. Members of the K-pop group Super Junior respectfully walked behind them and Jonghyun’s sister, Kim So-dam, led the group while holding onto a framed portrait of her brother.
The service concluded Jonghyun’s three-day funeral, which began on Tuesday, December 19, at the Asan Medical Center in Seoul. Five hundred fans gathered at the venue with flowers and pictures to honor the late singer. The remaining SHINee members were also in attendance and reportedly canceled their work obligations to led the service.
As previously reported, Jonghyun died on Monday, December 18, in what authorities believe may have been a suicide. The “Tell Me What To Do” singer was found unconscious in an apartment he was renting in Seoul’s Cheongdam-dong district. He went into cardiac arrest and was transported to a nearby hospital where he received CPR treatment, but did not regain consciousness.
Kim So-dam told police that she believed her brother took his own life after she had received a text message from him earlier on Monday, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency. The message read: “I’ve had a hard time. Please let me go and say that I did a good job. This is my last goodbye.”
Several fans and K-pop stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late singer. “You will be missed, Kim Jonghyun,” one SHINee devotee tweeted on Monday, December 19. “Rest in peace.”
