Three years before Lauren Scruggs said "I do" to Jason Kennedy, the former model’s life was forever changed. In an exclusive sneak peek at the couple’s upcoming E! special, The Kennedy Wedding: Jason and Lauren, the LOLO Magazine editor in chief recalls the tragic accident which left her without a left hand and eye.
"It was just such an incredible time in life. I felt like my career was starting. Everything was rolling really fast and then everything came to a halt," the model, who married the E! News co-host on Dec. 12 in Texas, tells the camera.
"On December 3rd, 2011, my mom and I decided to go to our friends house for dinner after church —their house is located on a private airport — and one of the friends was taking people up for plane rides,” Scruggs, 26, recalled. “I’m always up for an adventure so I was the first in line. When the plane landed, it was dark and rainy outside and I was getting out of the plane and when you get out you’re basically at the propeller, so I was sucked into it when I stepped out."
A year after the accident, Scruggs’ mother Cheryl told E! News in an emotional sit-down interview: "I ran outside and I could see Lauren lying facedown on the ground. She wasn't moving, she was lying in a pool of blood — I mean, it was all around her. All I had at that moment was God."
Fast-forward three years and Kennedy, who was introduced to Scruggs via E! host Giuliana Rancic following their 2012 interview, looks at the accident through a different lens.
“An accident 3 years ago was the worst day of her life. Ironically her worst day became the best day of my life, if [it] didn't happen we wouldn't have met. Tomorrow we celebrate the journey with our E! family at 8/7c. #TheKennedyWedding,” the 33-year-old wrote on an Instagram.
