Mariah Carey’s life in the spotlight was too much for fiancé James Packer, a source close to the businessman tells Us Weekly.
“He’s more private,” the insider tells Us of the 49-year-old billionaire. “She always has her whole entourage and he couldn’t take that. … Being in such a public relationship was fun for James at first, but then it got to be too much and he wanted his normal life back.”
According to the source, “something did happen in Greece, that’s when it went wrong.”
As previously reported, Carey’s rep told Entertainment Tonight that “Mariah and James had a fight in Greece and have not seen each other since.” Their September fight, the rep said, “was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah.”
A source close to the Grammy winner, who has been busy filming her upcoming E! reality show, Mariah’s World, told Us that Carey called things off with Packer because he wasn’t around enough.
“James has not been present for her, so she unfortunately couldn’t make it work and had to leave him,” the insider said. A rep for Packer, however, previously denied the claim and told Us in a statement, “This is simply not true.”
The pair got engaged back in January after dating for eight months.
Reps for Packer and Carey had no comment.
