Marine Cpl. Caleb Earwood married his bride, Maggie, in front of their closest family and friends in Asheville, N.C., on Saturday, May 23, and by the Memorial Day weekend's end, thousands across the globe learned just how special their wedding day really was.
In a stunningly emotional snapshot captured by North Carolina wedding photographer Dwayne Schmidt, the couple paused for a moment of prayer without breaking tradition of seeing each other before the altar. In Schmidt's photo, Caleb, in his dress uniform, can be seen bowing his head in reflection while his bride-to-be fights back tears.
"We were about to take our first steps in life together, and we didn't want to take a step without it being in God's will," Caleb, 21, told TODAY.com May 26 before he and Maggie, 22, visited Dolly Parton’s Dollywood theme park in Tennessee for their honeymoon. "I prayed to God for my beautiful and intelligent wife that he blessed me with and the amazing family I was marrying into."
Maggie, who met her husband in high school, was blown away by Caleb’s devotion in the minutes before they swapped vows. "When I first grabbed his hand, he was shaking really bad, so I knew he was really nervous," the new Mrs. Earwood told Today. "It relieved me to know the person I was getting ready to marry felt the same way about God."
“We're thankful that our picture is able to bless so many people and touch that many hearts,” said Caleb.
The new Mr. and Mrs. Earwood plan to make their home in Jacksonville, N.C., while Caleb is stationed at Camp Lejeune.
