Mickey Rooney Death: Liza Minnelli, Other Stars Mourn Celebrated Actor

Award-winning actor Mickey Rooney died at the age of 93 on Sunday, April 6, prompting an outpouring of grief and remembrances from celebrities. Stars including Mia Farrow and Lena Dunham took to Twitter to remember the late Hollywood great, celebrating his prolific career and commemorating his full life.

Rooney, whose film career spanned more than 85 years, is best known for his roles in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, National Velvet, and The Black Stallion. He received his first acting credit for the 1926 short silent film, Not to Be Trusted, going on to act in the decades up until his death. Before his passing, Rooney was filming scenes for an upcoming movie called The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which is expected to hit theaters later this year.

The famed actor was also remembered for his storied personal life, as he had eight marriages and was the father of nine children. Rooney was notably married to glamorous movie star Ava Gardner in the 1940s and wedded to singer Jan Rooney at the time of his death.

Liza Minnelli, whose mother Judy Garland was a close friend and frequent costar of Rooney’s, released a statement on Monday reading, “Mickey was somebody that everybody loved, but to me he was part of the family. He was one of a kind, and will be admired and respected always.”
