"Both Karen and I were quite excited," the proud papa says on behalf of himself and the hockey player's mother, Karen. "We're very happy for them."

A rep for Underwood, 26, confirmed her engagement to Fisher, 29, to UsMagazine.com on Monday. The Ottawa Senators player popped the question on Sunday. The super-private couple began dating in autumn of last year.

"We've gotten to know [Underwood] quite well over the last year and she's a great girl," Jim Fisher said. "We just think they make a great couple."

When pressed for details on the wedding planning (reports suggest a summer 2010 bash), the elder Fisher demurred, "They're staying pretty private… They haven't gone into a lot of detail…I can't comment on that… He didn't so I'm not."
