In the August issue of Vogue, Glee's breakout star Jane Lynch — who wed Dr. Lara Embry in Sunderland, Mass. last June — admits that married life has been anything but relaxing.
"We've taken on everything in our first year of marriage," Lynch, 51, says. "Moving. I gained a daughter. We renovated a house — and writing a book. I mean, talk about learning about your wife!"
No kidding. Embry, 42, helped Lynch pen her first memoir, Happy Accidents (out this fall). "We've been cracking up over it writing it together," Embry says. "In terms of self-disclosure, there's very little that surprises me anymore."
"So that's how she can handle writing my life story and not go, 'I'm outta here!'" Lynch laughs.
Photographed by Sebastian Kim, the wives pose as Thelma and Louise for the famed fashion magazine. "They're adorable together," says Cheyenne Jackson, who plays Dustin Goolsby on Glee. "Doting, respectful, and just clearly crazy about each other."
The women met at the 2009 gala for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and according to both Lynch and Embry, it was love at first sight.
"I had stopped dating altogether. I mean, you have to sit down and think, 'How do you trust your judgment?' But I saw Jane walking in the lobby and I thought, 'I'm supposed to follow her.' It was like I'd been picked up in a fishing net," Embry recalls. "I was supposed to go that way — and she was actually going the wrong way! But it was like the door was cracked. It was perfect."
Lynch, who didn't come out to her parents until she was 32, says her mother was impressed that she was marrying a doctor. Embry, meanwhile, jokes that her "mom's expectations were very low. She was OK with the fact that Jane had gainful employment!"
All jokes aside, Lynch and Embry are happier than ever raising daughter Haden in their newly renovated Laurel Canyon home. "I make her sound like the Dalai Lama," Lynch says of the 11-year-old, "but she's a pretty exceptional kid. She's just like me!"
