With the world waiting for the first glimpse of the royal baby, Us Weekly is looking back at how new father Prince William was introduced to the public after being born on June 21, 1982. Like his son, the Duke of Cambridge was delivered in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London. At the time, Princess Diana and Prince Charles broke royal tradition by welcoming their firstborn outside the palace walls. They headed home on June 22, after posing for pictures and waving to well-wishers outside the hospital.
Prince William weighed 7 lbs., 1.5. oz. at the time of his birth. The Duke of Cambridge’s son, meanwhile, weighed a heftier 8 lbs. 6 oz. when he was born on July 22, 2013.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles announced their son’s name on June 28, 1982: William Arthur Philip Louis. He was baptized on Aug. 4, 1982, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 31, have yet to reveal their son’s name.
Prince William and Kate Middleton aren’t expected to leave the hospital until at least 6 p.m. London time on Tuesday, July 23, and may perhaps wait until Wednesday morning.
