The Blind Side actor Quinton Aaron said he learned some valuable lessons while recovering from his health crisis.

Aaron, 41, detailed the “biggest mistake” he made in his marriage to Margarita DeLeon in a new interview with Good Morning America that aired on Monday, April 20, claiming he didn’t discover she was still married to another man until he woke up from a four-day coma after a spinal stroke in January.

“The entire time we were together, she told me she had been divorced for 10-plus years,” he told ABC News personality Steve Osunsami. “She even told the person where we were getting married, ‘Oh yes, I have all the documents. I can email over to you the divorce decree.’”

When Osunsami, 55, asked Aaron if he did his due diligence by trying to confirm her claims, the star noted he had to learn the hard way, saying, “That’s my biggest mistake, you know?” (The couple tied the knot two years ago at a Los Angeles-based wedding chapel.)

It was ultimately Aaron’s family who informed him when he awoke that DeLeon could not legally make medical decisions on his behalf due to her marital status. She was blocked after an attorney found records showing she was still legally wed to a man with whom she exchanged vows in 1992.

“And that’s what eventually led to the doctors removing her from around me,” Aaron said.

When asked if he loved her, Aaron confirmed, “Yes, I did.” In hindsight, Aaron stated he “would’ve definitely done a lot more research.”

DeLeon previously told Us Weekly exclusively that she is “spiritually married” to the actor while sharing her side of the story about her past relationship and what transpired in the hospital.

“I am separated from my ex and we are both working on this process to make sure a divorce gets finalized so we both can move on with our lives,” she told Us in February. “I have watched Quinton in the hospital for seven days, I prayed, I watched this man go through trials and tribulations.”

Aaron is currently doing physical therapy every day, for three hours a day, and is determined to regain his ability to walk soon. He credited his faith for keeping him strong.

“Not one of his family members confronted me in the hospital, and if they did, they were an invisible ghost with a sheet because none of them showed up,” DeLeon claimed. (An insider said otherwise, telling Us DeLeon knows exactly which family member in particular challenged her.)

As for his family, they shared a statement with Us. “Since the health crisis of our beloved family member Quinton Aaron, we have raised some suspicions about the legitimacy of Quinton and Margarita’s marriage to each other, as well as her legitimacy as a registered nurse,” they began.

“We have found some alarming details,” they continued. “We as a family believe Margarita isn’t who she claimed to be to us. This has caused us to want to investigate her further.”
