Richard Simmons Denies He’s Transitioning, Urges Compassion After Orlando Massacre

Richard Simmons gave a rare statement on Tuesday, June 14. The reclusive fitness guru denied the recent rumors that he’s transitioning and also addressed the tragic Orlando massacre that occurred on Sunday, June 12.

“Some tabloids have recently falsely reported that I am transitioning. In response, I feel compelled to set the record straight and refute these lies. Although I am not transitioning, I have and always will be supportive of those who are going through their journey,” Simmons shared on Facebook. “We should not lose focus on showing love, strength and compassion to all of the LGBT community during these tragic times. My broken heart and healing thoughts are with the people of Orlando and all other victims of prejudice, bigotry and hate.”

Simmons’ rep previously denied to Us Weekly the reports that he’s undergoing a sex change. After the National Enquirer published a story stating that the 67-year-old has adopted the name Fiona and plans to get breast implants and undergo hormone therapy, Simmons rep told Us, “It’s not true.”

“He is not transitioning into a woman,” his rep stated at the time. “He has decided to live quietly the last few years.”

The Sweatin’ to the Oldies star was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Friday, June 3, after he was reportedly exhibiting bizarre behavior. He was released days later and on Sunday, June 5, and released a statement to Us.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love and concern after hearing I was in the hospital,” Simmons’ statement read. “I was dehydrated and needed some fluids and now I am feeling great! Summer is here — drink plenty of liquids. Big hugs and kisses for caring.”

The workout guru also made headlines earlier this year after the New York Daily News claimed that his pals were concerned that he was being held hostage by his housekeeper, Teresa Reveles. During an interview with Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Simmons denied the reports, telling her that “no one is holding me in my house as a hostage.”
