Rob Lowe is really, really sorry. The Parks and Recreation alum admitted during an appearance on Conan on Monday, Jan. 19, that he accidentally killed a bird while playing golf back in 2007.

The incident occurred during a friendly celebrity tournament, but left such an impression on the actor that he quit the sport cold turkey.

“I gave golf up because I killed the Iowa state bird in flight, in a golf tournament,” Lowe, 50, told host Conan O’Brien.

“I went to a PGA Pro-Am celebrity thing in the state capital of Iowa, and I hit a really, I thought, nice sand wedge,” he recalled. “And boink, in the air, dead — into the trap.”

The situation is so rare that the tournament’s sponsors even calculated what the odds are of killing the state bird with just one swing. The answer? One in 747 million.

“That just sounds impossible,” O’Brien replied. “Unless the bird was suicidal!”
