A royal welcome! Fans and loved ones alike sent congratulations and well-wishes to Kate Middleton and Prince William on Saturday, May 2, after news broke that the Duke and Duchess are now parents to a royal baby girl named Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Prince George became a big brother on Saturday morning when Middleton, 33, gave birth to a princess at St. Mary’s Hospital in London with Prince William, 32, by her side. Kensington Palace tweeted that “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well,” inspiring an outpouring of support on social media.
The brother of the late Princess Diana, Earl Charles Spencer, took to Twitter to express his excitement about his great-niece and to congratulate his nephew William.
“Very lovely news from the Lindo Wing — so happy for all 4 of them,” he wrote, referencing the Duke, Duchess, Prince George, and the little girl, whose name will be announced “in due time,” according to a Kensington Palace rep.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are “absolutely delighted” at the birth of the princess, a rep for Clarence House tells Us.
Prime Minister David Cameron chimed in on Twitter, writing, “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby girl. I’m absolutely delighted for them.”
Leader of the Labour Party Ed Milliband echoed the excitement, tweeting, “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess on the birth of their daughter. Wishing them lots of joy and happiness — and hopefully some sleep!”
Royal Superfan Margaret Tyler was on site in London and gushed to Us Weekly about the birth.
“A little girl. I’m so excited!” she said. “It happened so quickly — she got here and gave birth in two-and-a-half hours! Well, they always say the second one happens quicker. I’m so happy for her. I think they will have another one too. Kate is one of three so I think she’ll go for one more. And now Prince George has the job of being an older protective brother! He’ll take great care of her I reckon!”
