Jackson Olson and Maggie Sajak are clearing up speculation about how their relationship began.
“A lot of you guys have been asking how Maggie and I met,” Olson, 28, said in an Instagram video with Sajak, 31, on Sunday, September 6.
“No, it was not at Disney, believe it or not,” the Savannah Bananas player added. (Olson and Sajak hard-launched their romance via Instagram in April with a photo at Disney’s Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom in Florida.)
Sharing throwback footage from the start of their relationship, Olson explained, “On October 16 of last year, we both went to a Dodgers playoff game.”
Sajak added that she and the athlete, who followed each other on social media one month prior, both posted on their Instagram Stories about being at the game. By chance, Sajak ended up in the background of one of Olson’s posts from the event.
“Then someone DM’d someone. Doesn’t matter who, and the other person DM’ed back. We waved at each other,” Sajak said, as Olson noted that the TV personality agreed to have a drink with him before returning to their own seats.
“But as they say, the rest is history, and as you may know, I’m a lifelong Yankees fan, but the Dodgers will always have a special place in my heart,” Olson concluded.
Shortly after making their relationship Instagram official, Olson took to his Instagram Story to share a clip from the movie Elf in which Will Ferrell’s character declares, “I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it.”
In early May, Olson exclusively told Us about meeting Maggie’s father, retired Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak.
“I have [met Pat Sajak], he’s a great guy,” Olson shared. “Everybody’s nervous to meet the father of the person they’re dating, or mother or both.”
He continued, “I’m a very weird person, I’m a very out there person. I’m not going to hold back who I am as a person, and people seem to enjoy that company. I’m happy that I’m able to be myself truly in every aspect now.”
Though Maggie and Olson’s relationship has mostly been long-distance — the former is based in Los Angeles while the latter lives in Savannah, Georgia — the couple have remained committed to making things work.
“It’s really cool because we’re obviously living very different lives right now on the opposite side of the country, but we’re able to come together and just have an awesome relationship,” Olson gushed to Us. “I feel like in any relationship, you’re trying to figure out how to see each other as frequently as possible, which is never something that I thought in my past I was going to want to do … but now I really do.”
He continued, “It’s just about planning and making sure you’re setting aside time to see each other and make really cool experiences happen because a start of a relationship never happens again. You only get one chance at a start of a relationship.”
