Though Carey’s impressive vocals are as polished as they come, she hadn’t yet perfected her now-iconic glowing skin and long, golden tresses when she first made her debut. The pop superstar was introduced to the world as a fresh-faced brunette who flaunted curls and minimal makeup, a look that she rocked on the cover of her debut album — 1990’s Mariah Carey — which included the No. 1 single “Vision of Love.”
While she continued to embrace her hair’s natural texture for several more years, Carey began experimenting with her look in the mid-’90s when she started playing with bolder makeup and straightening her hair on occasion. The Grammy winner went on to sport sleeker — and much lighter! — locks paired with a colorful pink lip in the music video for her 1995 smash “Always Be My Baby.”
In the following years, Carey continued to transform her image with blonder hair and longer lashes, and she discovered the magic of contouring. Most recently, the MAC ambassador has embraced loose, dirty blonde waves, and enhances her model-worthy cheekbones with lots of highlighter.
During a November 2015 interview with New York Magazine’s The Cut, the elusive chanteuse opened up about the changes she’s made in her glam routine since the ’90s.
“I don’t think there were great beauty trends in the ’90s — I was just doing my own thing. In the beginning, I didn’t know what was going on with the makeup, and then later I was fortunate to work with great people,” the Mariah’s World star shared. “I used to work with Laura Mercier; that was a turning point for me.”
