Now here’s something to cheer about! Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson’s boyfriend, football player Andrew East, surprised the gymnast with a proposal at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Friday, July 24 — and she said yes!
Johnson, 23, was at the Cubs game with fellow Team USA gymnast Alicia Quinn to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Cubs vs. Phillies game. As she was leaving the mound (she threw a worthy pitch, by the way), boyfriend East, also 23, got down on one knee and asked Johnson to be his wife.
In a video of the big pre-game moment that the Cubs shared on Twitter, the stunned gymnast excitedly nodded her head to accept before embracing him.
"I'm the luckiest girl in the entire world! We're looking to tie the knot next spring/summer before Rio. And it was honestly a complete surprise," Johnson tells Us Weekly exclusively. "He was acting so weird all day and was so quiet but I shrugged it off because I was so terrified of throwing the first pitch!"
She added: "Brady Quinn actually helped him pull it off!! It was absolutely perfect. He now heads to training camp for the Chiefs. Planning will have to be long distance but I'll be visiting a lot — since we're now house shopping as well!!"
Quinn also shared the happy news of the Season 8 Dancing With the Stars champ’s engagement by sharing a photo collage from Wrigley Field with the caption, “Pretty eventful day – throwing out the first pitch, walking on our hands…and @shawnjohnson getting engaged to our boy @Andrewdeast #causal #nbd #happy tears."
Johnson, who retired from gymnastics in 2012 due to knee injuries, has yet to issue a statement about her engagement, but has retweeted the news on Twitter.
