Taylor Swift once said that her bond with her fans was the "longest and best relationship" she'd ever had — and this interaction proves just how special it really is. On Mother's Day, May 10, the "Style" singer got a Tumblr message from one of her many fans, Kaileen, who revealed that Swift's music had gotten her through the death of her mom.
"Dear Taylor," Kaileen's note began. "It's me, iced coffee girl, and I could really use a hug. Today is Mother's Day, a day most people spend with their mothers thanking them for everything they do. But, for me, I can't spend this day with my mom because she's in heaven."
Kaileen went on to explain that her mother died last January. "My mom was my best friend, the one I laughed with, the one I cried with, and the one I loved with my whole heart," she wrote. "For a while, I felt empty."
Swift, 25, "filled that hole." As Kaileen told the pop songstress, "You took me out of my sad place and made me happy. And because of you, I got through something that was the hardest thing in the world for me. Today's going to be another hard day, but I know with you on my side I can get through anything."
The 1989 hitmaker — whose own mother, Andrea, was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year — took the time to respond to Kaileen not long after, offering thoughtful words of love and compassion.
"Kaileen — I love you so much and can't imagine what you must be feeling today," she wrote in her reply. "You've lived through my worst fear. I'm so sorry you can't spend today with her. It's not fair, and there's no reason why you should feel okay about it. No one should ever expect you to feel normal today."
She continued: "I admire and respect your ability to put forth such a sunny, sweet disposition when you've been through something so dark and tragic so recently. I never would've guessed by your attitude or your posts. I never would've known if you hadn't told me. Sending you a huge hug today. Gonna go get iced coffee and cheers to you."
As previously reported, Swift used Tumblr to reveal her mom's cancer diagnosis in early April, writing in a letter to fans, "I'm writing to you with an update I wish I wasn't giving you, but it's important and I'm used to sharing important events in my life with you."
Swift kept the details of Andrea's condition vague but said her mom wanted people to know so they'd persuade the people they love to get checked. "She's got an important battle to fight," the "Bad Blood" chanteuse wrote. "Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this."
