Tragedy on set. Two men were killed and one injured in a plane crash on the Colombia set of Tom Cruise’s upcoming film Mena on Friday, Sept. 11.
According to the Associated Press, Hollywood pilot Alan Purwin and Colombian native Carlos Berl died at the scene of the accident, and a pilot from Georgia, Jimmy Lee Garland, was severely injured in the crash.
Garland was rushed to a local hospital in Medellin, where he is currently in intensive care.
An official tells the AP that Cruise, 53, was not onboard, though the actor — and trained pilot — was photographed climbing out of the cockpit of the small plane when he arrived in Colombia on Aug. 20 to begin shooting.
The plane was leaving Santa Fe de Antioquia for Medellin when bad weather likely led to the crash, the official said. Traffic controllers were not alerted of any emergencies.
Mena will star Cruise as American pilot Barry Seal, a drug runner recruited by the CIA to take down drug lord Pablo Escobar.
