Family Affair

Shiloh, Zahara, Vivienne, Knox, Pax and Maddox attended the event all wearing matching flowers. "They really help me so much. We’re really such a unit,” Jolie told the New York Times in an interview published on September 13. “They’re the best friends I’ve ever had. Nobody in my life has ever stood by me more.”

Making a Statement

Jolie opened up about the film, which is based on the 2000 memoir by Cambodian author Loung Ung, on Good Morning America's Friday, September 15 episode. "For any country, it's important to understand ... your past," Jolie said. "Cambodia has a beautiful, ancient, thousands-of-year-old, you know, glorious past, but also a past that is, has, war and genocide. And it's something that isn't spoken about.”

Taking a Look Back

Working as a single mother, Jolie says, isn't something that she feels the need to be praised for. "It's kind of put that way as if it's something exceptional. There are women that are working three jobs and single mothers, and don't have the resources and don't have the support," the humanitarian told GMA. "They're a marvel ... I'm not.” (Jolie coparents the kids with Brad Pitt. The actress filed for divorce in September 2016 after two years of marriage.)

For Maddox, working on the film was about much more than learning a craft. "This wasn't as much about him becoming a filmmaker as him working with his countrymen," Jolie said on GMA of her eldest child, who she adopted from Cambodia in 2002.. "When I see him on set working with everybody, and when he says to me, 'Well, Mom, it's because I'm Cambodian,' or ... something about 'my home,' or ... I say to him, 'are you proud?' And he says, 'I'm very proud to be Cambodian ... That is him understanding who he is, and that's the most important thing ... that came out of this experience.”

Joining Together

Loung Ung's story, Jolie says, had inspired her own life. “Loung had such horrors in her life but also had so much love, and that is why she’s all right today,” she told NYT. “That is something I need to remember."
