Three’s company! From the infamous feud between Disney darlings Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan over Aaron Carter in his glory days to the dramatic Laguna Beach tug-of-war between Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari over Stephen Colletti, here are 10 love triangles you probably forgot about.
In possibly the most famous love triangle of all time, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were Hollywood’s golden couple until the actor fell in love with his Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar Angelina Jolie. Aniston and Pitt split in 2005 and he’s now married to and shares six children with Jolie.
During their Disney days, the two actresses were at war over Aaron Carter circa 2003. He was dating Hilary Duff after meeting on the Lizzie McGuire set in 2001 until he allegedly strayed with Lindsay Lohan. “I was dating [Duff] for like a year-and-a-half and then I just got a little bored so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay,” Carter told CNBC in 2005.
Fans of Laguna Beach may remember that Kristin Cavallari was dating Lauren Conrad’s BFF and crush Stephen Colletti during their time on the MTV show, which caused major tension between the then-high schoolers. Cavallari later said the love triangle was played up for the cameras, writing in her book, “One of the most hurtful things they did was pressure Stephen to spend time with another girl from the show, Lauren, while he and I were dating.”
In 2003, Billy Crudup left his then-pregnant girlfriend of eight years, Mary-Louise Parker, for a new relationship with his Stage Beauty costar Claire Danes. “I was just in love with him,” Danes said in 2015. “And needed to explore that and I was 24 … I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be.” Danes and Crudup called it quits in 2006.
Taylor Swift blamed Camilla Belle for her breakup with Joe Jonas, and she even penned her 2010 track “Better Than Revenge” about the model. “Soon she’s gonna find / Stealing other people’s toys / On the playground won’t / Make you many friends,” Swift sings.
This is one love triangle that had a happy ending. Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez got cozy in early 2009, but later that same year, the Twilight hunk romanced Taylor Swift for a few short months. Despite dating the same guy in their teenage years, the two singers are still best friends.
In the wake of rumors that Ryan Phillippe had an affair with Abbie Cornish, he divorced his wife of eight years, Reese Witherspoon, in 2007. Phillippe and Cornish later went public with their relationship and even moved in together before they split in 2010.
Soon after Nick Jonas and Miley Cyrus ended their relationship in 2007 after dating for more than a year, things between the boy bander and Selena Gomez started heating up. “We never feuded. We both liked the same guy when we were 16,” the “Same Old Love” singer said years later of both pop stars having a crush on the former Jonas Brother. Jonas and Gomez dated on and off for two years.
Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear went through a very public divorce battle in 2006 after the rocker allegedly got too close with Locklear’s former bestie Denise Richards. In a statement to Us Weekly at the time, he denied ever cheating on his wife. The Bon Jovi guitarist and Richards went on to date on and off for several years, and Locklear reportedly later gave the relationship her blessing.
